Women in India have such a wonderful way of expressing seasonal change by the clothes they wear. Flamboyant summer colors are worn everywhere from lime greens to chartreuse and turquoise to inkpot blues. In the cooler climes of the hills, women like checks or heavily embroidered ‘kemis’ (traditional dress) over wide and baggy pants, a striped shawl wrapped casually around their heads. In Southern India you’ll find that women and young girls alike adorn their long dark hair with sweet-smelling jasmine and other exotic flowers.
One of the great pleasures of my recent trip to India in April and May was to be reminded again of how wonderfully connected women are to a sense of color and beauty. Mind you, it was a real relief to leave the scorching heat of the Plains as the country experienced one of its hottest summers ever and arrive at 7,400 ft in the Himalayan foothills to a cool breeze wafting through the pine trees, the climate dry and invigorating.
JOURNEY TO SOUTHERN INDIA | 17 Days | 14 Feb-2 March 2017 |
embroidery, elephants & ethnic communities
Malabar to Coromandel, Karnataka, Kerala & Tamil Nadu
SOUTHERN INDIA IS A ‘GO’ WITH SPACES AVAILABLE – Now’s the time to reserve your place!
Thanks to Ruth Altman who let me know that Banjara: Cloth and Culture of a Wandering Tribe by Charlotte Kwon and Tim McLaughlin is available on Amazon. I am loving the book and highly recommend it for anyone joining the Southern India tour, as we’ll be visiting a Banjara community and an embroidery project in Karnataka. The distinctive mirror-work embroideries and textiles of the Banjara tribe are exquisite.
There’ll also be the opportunity to visit other exciting craft initiatives that empower rural communities, see a stunning variety of natural dyed and hand loom textiles as well as meander weekly markets and eclectic bazaars. A spice farm and a 3-night stay at a family-run Heritage Hotel in Chettinad are just some of our special experiences… with superb photo opportunities!
TOURS ON THE HORIZON…
SOUTH AFRICA & THE ROYAL KINGDOM OF SWAZILAND | September 2017 |I’m delighted to once again offer this tour as a destination; we’ll explore the rich landscape of Southern African peoples, crafts and textiles. Due to conflicting dates for a few people, I have changed the departure to September (instead of April) 2017. THE ISLAND OF SRI LANKA | late January/early February 2018 |A wonderful itinerary is in place to this jewel of a country situated in the Indian Ocean and it will shortly be up on the website.
MYANMAR (BURMA) & CAMBODIA | November 2018 |
This trip is in the planning and includes mountainous Eastern Shan where we’ll visit the villages of diverse ethnic Minorities who still wear traditional clothing.
Many of you have asked to receive advance copies of the above trips. Do let us know if you would like to add your name to the list.
