A journey of exploration to find the crafts and textiles, cultural traditions, lost temples and palaces of West Bengal, Assam and the high, misty landscapes of Meghalaya.

Dear All

A new year begins and already we’re making plans for the next. Here comes 2020! Even after three decades of leading trips to India, I’m still awestruck by the exciting discoveries and surprises waiting to be found. No wonder this greatest of subcontinents holds my heart and fascination as it does so many of yours.

The new tour, for November 2020, is to the far corners of Northeast India, that magical, secret area bordering Tibet, Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh. It is in these parts that the tribal communities and local life, the culture, arts and crafts, are still at their most traditional. We’ll also be exploring the undiscovered parts of West Bengal, vibrant with an extraordinary, age-old yet sophisticated textile heritage dating back centuries, with weaving villages and spectacular architectural wonders redolent of this great past. My May Newsletter will have the full itinerary and more details, as will my website… if you’d like an early copy please email me.

… our travels begin in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) known for its grand colonial architecture, art galleries, fabulous textile shops and bazaars. Experience the temples, flamboyant palaces and exquisite textiles of West Bengal. See the finest Jamdani muslin made by talented weavers practicing age-old ancestral skills, to create cloth as light as air and patronized through the centuries by the great Moghul Emperors.

Meet the skilled makers of Baluchari sarees, woven in silk with elaborate mythological designs, working from their homes and villages along the banks of the River Ganges. ‘Mother Ganga’ is the holiest river in India and a rich lifeline to millions of Indians. Spend several nights in a romantic 300 year old heritage palace overlooking the flowing waters from where we’ll explore this little-visited area.

We’ll continue to mountainous Meghalaya and Assam in the remote Northeast to discover first-hand the culture of the Mishing, Garo and Khasi tribals and learn about their weaving, natural silk reeling and dyeing as well as their farming traditions. Reaching Kaziranga National Park, famous for its magnificent one-horned Rhinoceros we’ll enjoy jeep safaris and ride on elephant back. We’ll visit the extraordinary Majuli island in the middle of the Brahmaputra River, known for its Vaishnavaite culture and monasteries, with its unique treasures of handcrafts, pottery and mask making… a fast disappearing world.

Every step of the way there will be fantastic photographic opportunities – in flamboyant palaces, mosques, Jain temples and rural villages set off the beaten track; and ample time to meet and interact with people in a very personal way right across the full spectrum of tradition and culture in these most fascinating regions of India.

I look forward with much pleasure to meeting many of you this year as we explore our wonderful world!
